Three

Improve comfort and confidence

With crowns and bridges, you can eat, speak, and smile comfortably again. Many patients tell us their daily quality of life improves when damaged or missing teeth are restored.

One

Strengthen and protect teeth

Crowns act like a cap, protecting weak or damaged teeth and restoring their strength. They are often used when a tooth has suffered severe decay, has broken down after years of grinding, or needs support after root canal treatment.

Two

Replace missing teeth permanently

Bridges fill gaps left by missing teeth, restoring your bite and preventing other teeth from shifting out of position. This helps keep your bite balanced and protects your long-term oral health.

Four

Natural-looking results

Made from porcelain, resin, or ceramics, crowns and bridges are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Most people will never notice you have had restorative treatment.

I was in pain with a lower wisdom tooth for nearly a year. It was sitting on the nerve in 2 places so it was a risky procedure. That being said the Doctor sent me for a CT scan to get a full picture on my tooth and nerves. She was happy in the end to take the tooth out. Talk about a quick job. In and out in 20 mins. No more pain and I didn't even feel a thing during the procedure. Cannot recommend this Dentist enough. The staff and nurses are all super friendly and trust me that you will have no worries going to this Dentist :-)

Great experience from my initial consultation to finishing Invisalign treatment 14 months later. Staff are so friendly, it’s easy to make appointments and very efficient when you’re there. Huge thanks to Gabi, Dr Perry and team - am delighted with the results. Would highly recommend this clinic!

I’ve been seeing Dr.Oana Ursache for a while now, and honestly, she’s the kindest and most patient dentist I’ve ever met. From my very first visit, she made me feel completely at ease—which is saying a lot, considering I used to get pretty anxious about dental appointments 😅 She explains everything clearly, works gently, and genuinely cares—not just about the end result, but about how you feel throughout the whole process. The clinic is clean, calm, and welcoming, and everyone on her team is just as lovely and professional. I wholeheartedly recommend her, especially if you’re looking for a dentist who combines real expertise with warmth and empathy. I actually look forward to my appointments now!

Incredible! I was very nervous attending for an extraction. The team here are exceptional. The professionalism and courtesy extended to me from Fiona at the front desk to Naomi and her team was fantastic even when appointment times slid due to an earlier emergency. I did take the option for sedation which from start to finish was painless. One week later, no issues and all is well.

Just competed my orthodontic treatment plan at Pearls Maynooth and would highly recommend. From the initial consultation with Dr. Perry to majority of the treatment with the wonderful Gabby I couldn’t be happier with the results. Just over 18 months of clear braces and the finished look is way more than I expected! All of the team are so friendly and accommodating. The appointments are quick and convenient with availability before 9am and after 5pm ideal! Emma & Katie on reception always so helpful and efficient. Thank you Pearls for my new smile 😁

Hi my experience with Friary Court Dental has been life changing for me. From the day I walked in for a consultation with Professor of Implantology Dr Renan Devita and Dental nurse Dara Maher, Dr Devita went through all the procedures in detail. The care and after care was second to none. The compliments that I have got after my implants are amazing. My whole mouth was reconstructed by Dr Devita (I got my smile back). The price was reasonable. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for implants to give Friary Court Dental a call.

What should I know before getting crowns or bridges?

Everything you need to know about crowns and bridges in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Crowns and Bridges

What are crowns?

A crown is like a protective cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It’s often used when a tooth is too broken for a filling to repair, or when a root canal treatment has left the tooth more fragile. Crowns can also rebuild teeth worn down by grinding or hold a bridge securely in place. They can be made from metals, porcelain, resin, or ceramics. With careful colour matching, crowns look just like natural teeth, making them both functional and aesthetic.

Crowns and Bridges

What are bridges?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a fixed solution. The artificial tooth is attached to neighbouring teeth or dental implants, creating a strong and natural-looking result. Bridges not only restore appearance but also prevent teeth drifting into gaps, which could otherwise affect your bite and even cause jaw discomfort.

Who will be treating me?

Our restorative dentistry team provides safe, reliable crown and bridge treatments across all Dentistry.ie practices. You’ll also be supported by treatment coordinators who guide you through every stage of your journey, ensuring you feel comfortable and informed.

How do crowns and bridges work?

Restoring teeth step by step

Crowns

Your tooth is carefully shaped before a crown is fitted over it, like a top hat over a smaller hat. This protects what remains of the tooth and restores both its strength and appearance. Crowns are particularly useful when a tooth is cracked, heavily decayed, or has become weak after other dental treatments.

Bridges

A bridge fills gaps left by missing teeth. The replacement tooth is attached to crowns on either side, or secured to implants. This fixed restoration restores your natural bite, helps prevent gum disease by closing gaps, and improves the look of your smile.

What are the signs you might need a crown or bridge?

Recognising when restorative care is needed

  • Toothache - Severe decay may require a crown for relief and to save the tooth.
  • Tooth sensitivity - Worn enamel or damage may need restoration with a crown.
  • Discolouration - Crowns can cover chipped, broken, or decayed teeth for a more natural look.
  • Bad breath - Caused by untreated tooth decay or infection, often solved by restoring damaged teeth with a crown or bridge.
How does the treatment process work?

Your crowns and bridges journey in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Your consultation

You’ll meet your treatment coordinator to discuss your concerns and goals. We’ll explain the difference between crowns and bridges and advise which option may suit your needs best.

Your assessment

Your dentist will take X-rays or digital scans of your teeth to design a personalised treatment plan. This ensures your crown or bridge is designed to fit securely and look natural.

Preparing your teeth

For crowns, the damaged tooth is carefully reshaped so the crown can fit snugly over it. For bridges, the teeth or implants supporting the bridge are prepared. Temporary restorations may be fitted while your permanent ones are being made.

Fitting your restoration

Your custom crown or bridge is bonded into place. Your dentist will check your bite and make fine adjustments, ensuring your restoration feels natural and comfortable.

What questions do people in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare ask about crowns and bridges?

Your crowns and bridges
questions
answered

What is a crown?

A crown is a big repair for a badly damaged tooth. It usually looks like a hollow tooth that fits over a very careful preparation of whatever remains - very much like a top hat fitting over a smaller top hat. Crowns are used to protect, cover and restore the shape of your teeth when fillings don’t solve the problem.

When are crowns used?

Crowns are often used to restore a tooth that suffered severe decay. They can also be used to fill teeth that have been badly worn down from years of grinding, or to completely reconstruct an area where multiple teeth are missing. You may also need a crown to hold a permanent bridge in place.

What materials are crowns made from?

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials depending on your requirements and often look exactly like perfect natural teeth. Dental crowns can be made out of metals, porcelain, resin and ceramics. They typically don’t require special care over time other than regular good oral hygiene.

What are the signs of tooth decay that might mean I need a crown?

  • Toothache: Toothache can be one of the most painful sensations known. It’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to keep going through this, especially if it keeps you awake at night or causes occasional sharp pain. Crowns are often the best way to relieve this problem.
  • Tooth sensitivity: Sensitivity generally happens when your tooth enamel wears away or dissolves. You may feel tenderness or pain when eating or drinking something hot, cold or sweet.
  • Discolouration: Grey, brown or black spots on your teeth may indicate cavities. Crowns are a popular way to cover broken, chipped and decayed teeth, restoring their function and natural look.
  • Bad breath: Tooth decay is essentially a bacterial infection that affects the surface of your tooth (enamel). The bacteria create toxins that eat away at the enamel, which leads to decay and can result in bad breath.

If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment at Dentistry.ie. Our team in Dublin City Centre, Kilkenny, Kimmage, Balbriggan and Artane can assess your teeth and discuss the best treatment options for you.

What is a bridge and when is it used?

If you are missing teeth, there are many options for you, including partial or full dentures, dental implants or a bridge. A bridge is a permanent fix for patients with missing teeth. Unlike a partial denture, it is fixed in place.

Bridges are incredibly useful if you have very few missing teeth or if the missing teeth are located on one side of your mouth. It is similar to a partial denture in that it has a base and artificial teeth. The base of a dental bridge is normally made from a type of precious metal, while the artificial tooth placed on top is made from porcelain and styled to match the shape and shade of your natural teeth.

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

Replacing missing teeth is not just cosmetic - it helps prevent gum disease and other tooth decay. Gaps can place strain on teeth on either side, which ‘lean’ into the vacant space, altering the bite of the upper and lower teeth. This alteration can trigger clenching and grinding, further straining these teeth.

How do I get started with a bridge or other tooth replacement?

The first place to start is to call us at any one of our practices across Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare. Book an appointment and speak to one of our highly-skilled practitioners at Dentistry.ie. Our job is to put you at ease. Next, we’ll do a detailed analysis of your mouth and determine what solution would suit you best. Third, we’ll put a plan in place that suits you, not us - you. You are our priority, including scheduling regular appointments over the course of the treatment that suits you.
