Discover how root canal therapy protects your smile

Three

Prevent future complications

By removing infection and sealing the tooth, root canal treatment helps prevent abscesses and further oral health issues.

One

Save your natural tooth

Root canals allow us to clean and repair infected teeth instead of removing them. This protects your natural bite and prevents the need for more complex treatment.

Two

Relief from pain

An infected tooth can cause severe pain and sensitivity. Root canal treatment removes the infection, providing lasting relief.

Four

Protect your oral health

After a root canal, the tooth is often restored with a crown, strengthening it for long-term function and appearance.

I was in pain with a lower wisdom tooth for nearly a year. It was sitting on the nerve in 2 places so it was a risky procedure. That being said the Doctor sent me for a CT scan to get a full picture on my tooth and nerves. She was happy in the end to take the tooth out. Talk about a quick job. In and out in 20 mins. No more pain and I didn't even feel a thing during the procedure. Cannot recommend this Dentist enough. The staff and nurses are all super friendly and trust me that you will have no worries going to this Dentist :-)

Excellent experience, I highly recommend. I went in to fix a really nasty fracture on my upper left front tooth. It wasn't the first time that has happened to me because my bite is a little wonky and it makes my teeth brittle. I was really embarrassed of my appearance, but I was greeted with a lovely smile and everyone at the clinic was so kind. I felt at ease. Dr. Renan especially as he explained all my options to me so I could make the most informed decision. He even went out of his way to fix my bite to prevent the tooth from fracturing again. The tooth looks beautiful now and I feel confident again. 10/10

From start to finish I couldn’t thank the team enough especially Tracey, Lorraine and Darren. As an extremely nervous patient I was so at ease the minute I walked in the door with such a friendly personal greeting and the dental work Darren done was incredible at a very affordable price. He explained all steps and what the best options for me. I will definitely be back! Thanks all at team Balbriggan dental and facial aesthetics you saved my smile in time for a family wedding.

I’m not one to post a lot of reviews, but I had to post a review for Dr Shane Boggs at Kildare Dental Centre. Over the holidays I had phase one of an emergency root canal done at another practice. After that traumatic experience, I googled dentists near me that specialise in nervous patient care and treatment to finish the treatment. After visiting Dr Shane yesterday, I have honestly never felt more at ease in a dental practice. Dr Shane is softly spoken, gentle, informative and incredibly reassuring. He listened to me and continued to reassure me of the situation. I’m willingly back in a few weeks to complete my treatment and begin a new journey for my teeth. As an extremely nervous dental patient who has avoided dentists for years, I couldn’t recommend Dr Shane and the team at KDC more.

For someone who is absolutely terrified of the dentist I had a great experience. Dr Anna completely put me at ease and made sure I was ok throughout the experience. The surgery itself is exceptionally clean and the reception staff member was incredibly nice and again put me at ease when I came in.

Amazing service. Have been having awful issues with a back bottom wisdom tooth for quite some time and was referred to oral surgeons by previous dental practitioners. As you can imagine prices quoted to remove via surgery were always ridiculous. Attended Pearl dental in Maynooth and after a thorough examination from Nicole, she was able to remove this tooth herself no problem without having to be referred and I have been pain free for weeks now. She is so efficient at her job. Would highly recommend. Great service, friendly staff and they get the job done.

Fantastic treatment by Dr. Naomi and her professional (and glamorous) support team. Had two roots removed in under an hour, minimal pain. A very empathic surgeon.

I had a fantastic experience at Sundrive Dental. I was in so much pain when I arrived, but Anne Marie, the receptionist, was warm and welcoming, making the check-in process smooth and stress-free. Dr. Renan and Nurse Maria were amazing—professional yet personal. They assessed my situation quickly and performed the emergency procedure seamlessly, answering all my questions and putting me at ease. The clinic was spotless, and their infection control was top-notch. This team sets the bar high for dental care. Highly recommend!

I had an incredible experience here, Dr. Hazem and the entire team were outstanding from start to finish. I came in with a painful wisdom tooth and was seen quickly with an emergency appointment on a Saturday, which I really appreciated. Dr. Hazeem extracted the tooth the following week with such care and skill, making me feel comfortable throughout the whole process. The aftercare was above and beyond – they even called to check on me afterward, which shows how much they truly care about their patients. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness. Highly recommend to anyone in need of a reliable and caring dentist. 10/10 service!

What should I know before getting a root canal?

Everything you need to know about root canal treatment in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Root canal

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment that removes infected pulp from inside a tooth. Once the infected tissue is removed, the root canal is cleaned, shaped, and filled to protect against further infection. Finally, the tooth is sealed and usually restored with a crown to bring back strength and function.

Root canal

When might I need one?

Root canal treatment is needed when decay or damage allows bacteria to reach the pulp inside your tooth. Signs include severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of the gums, or a darkened tooth. If untreated, the infection can spread and cause an abscess.

Root canal

How does a root canal work?

After numbing your tooth with local anaesthetic, your dentist removes the infected pulp and cleans the root canals thoroughly. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. A crown or large filling is usually placed afterwards to restore the tooth’s strength.

Your root canal journey in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Your consultation

We’ll assess your tooth with an examination and X-rays to confirm if a root canal is the best option. Our team will answer your questions and explain the treatment clearly.

Preparing your tooth

Local anaesthetic ensures your tooth is completely numb. Your dentist carefully opens the tooth to access the infected pulp and root canals.

Cleaning and filling

The infected tissue is removed and the canals are disinfected. They are then filled with a special material to prevent bacteria from returning.

Restoring your tooth

A temporary or permanent crown or filling is placed to protect the tooth. This restores both strength and appearance, allowing you to chew normally again.

What questions do people in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare ask about root canals?

Your root canal
questions
answered

Are root canals painful?

Thanks to local anaesthetic, root canals are no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Patients in Dublin City Centre, Kilkenny, and Balbriggan often comment that the treatment brought immediate relief compared to the pain of the infection itself.

How long does a root canal take?

Most root canals can be completed in one or two appointments. The time depends on how many root canals the tooth has. Patients in Kimmage and Artane often complete treatment in less than two hours per visit.

Do I always need a crown afterwards?

Not always, but most root canal teeth are restored with a crown to provide extra strength. Your dentist will discuss whether a crown or large filling is the right option.

What happens if I don’t get a root canal?

If infection spreads, it can cause an abscess, severe pain, and even lead to tooth loss. In some cases, emergency extraction is the only option. Patients across Dublin, Kilkenny and Kildare often find treating early avoids bigger problems later.

Can children or teenagers need root canals?

Yes - although less common, root canal treatment can sometimes be needed for younger patients. Our team in Dublin City Centre and Kilkenny provides gentle care to ensure children feel comfortable if this treatment is required.
