We believe in saving teeth whenever possible. Extractions are only recommended when there’s no other option, and we’ll always explore alternatives first. If an extraction is needed, our caring team ensures it’s carried out safely and comfortably, with advice on how to protect your long-term oral health.

When a tooth can’t be saved, removing it can prevent infection or damage to neighbouring teeth.
Our dentists aim to keep teeth in place whenever possible - extraction is a last resort.
After an extraction, we’ll discuss replacement options like implants, dentures, or crowns and bridges to restore your bite and appearance.

If severe decay, infection, or damage makes repair impossible, extraction may be necessary. Even then, we always explore whether a filling or crown could save the tooth first. Families in Dublin City Centre, Kilkenny, Kimmage, Balbriggan, and Artane appreciate our commitment to preservation.

Once a tooth is removed, surrounding teeth may shift. That’s why we recommend planning for replacement solutions like implants or bridges to protect your bite. We’ll create a tailored plan to suit your needs.

Yes. Extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Our caring team takes things at your pace, and sedation can be arranged for patients who feel particularly nervous.

Extractions don’t have to be scary. It is always better to preserve a tooth, even for a few years. Think of your mouth like a game of Jenga; the more blocks that are pulled out, the more likely the whole tower will fall. That’s why, here at Dentistry.ie in Dublin, Kilkenny and Kildare, we will always do our utmost to save a tooth wherever possible.
The more back teeth that are removed, the less likely the front teeth will last properly. Only when absolutely essential will we recommend removing a tooth. We believe the function of the mouth depends on retaining as many teeth as possible, which helps keep it healthier and more functional for longer.
When a tooth is removed, the surrounding teeth slowly move out of position. A tilted tooth is more fragile and can withstand much less pressure than an upright one. Even the stable teeth on the opposite side of the mouth can suffer as they take more strain. Over time, this means the whole mouth functions at only a fraction of its original capability.
This can cause the gum surrounding the wisdom tooth to become infected. Prior to modern medicine, in years gone by, this could often be fatal and even these days can prove highly unpleasant. They tend to hold food against the back of the teeth in front, which can drive decay in the most vulnerable location a tooth has. In rare situations, wisdom teeth can decay like normal teeth which can cause deep-seated dental abscesses. Which cannot be resolved with a simple extraction. This occurrence would require invasive surgery by a specialist.
For the vast majority of people, wisdom teeth are unnecessary and do nothing but cause problems for the long-term health of their mouths. Very often wisdom teeth are angled against the teeth in front of them and don’t come up properly. Frequently, half the tooth is buried in the gum and the other half in the mouth.
The symptoms of a problematic wisdom tooth include:
If you experience any of the above symptoms, do bear in mind, these symptoms can be caused by other factors. However, you should still seek medical attention.
This is very dependent on the difficulty of the procedure.
Generally, you will be completely numb during the removal of the wisdom tooth. Most people will be sore for a few days after the extraction. This pain will vary depending on the complexity/difficulty of the extraction.
It is recommended that a problematic wisdom tooth is removed between the ages of 18 – 24. After this age, it becomes much more difficult to extract because the bone becomes denser and the roots finish forming. There are even special techniques to remove wisdom teeth in the early to mid-teens before they finish forming.
